About the Author:
The year CANDY LEONARD was born, ELVIS PRESLEY released his first hit record, ALLEN GRINSBERG’s Howl was published, and Soviet troops crushed rebellions in Poland and Hungary.
Growing up in a progressive and politically engaged household in Queens, NY, Candy witnessed the transformative events of the 1960s as a precocious and inquisitive young person. This particular intersection of biography and history provided fertile ground for her sociological imagination and her insights into the BEATLES as a phenomenon.
After getting a master’s degree in Human Development and a doctorate in Sociology, Candy began a career in academic research, exploring the effects of media and popular culture on child development, gender relations, and family life.
On her long journey from Queens to her current home, Cambridge, MA, she has been a professor, a talk show host, a child and family advocate, and qualitative research consultant to the healthcare industry. She’s also a parent and a grandparent. Through it all, she maintained her life-long passion for the BEATLES. She is intimately familiar with their entire body of work, biography, commentary, fan culture, and has written and lectured on them from her unique social science vantage point.

In dem Jahr, in dem CANDY LEONARD geboren wurde, veröffentlichte ELVIS PRESLEY seinen ersten Hit, ALLEN GRINSBERG sein Gedicht “Howl” (“Das Geheul”) und sowjetische Truppen schlugen Aufstände in Polen und Ungarn nieder.
Sie wuchs in einem fortschrittlichen und politisch beschäftigten Haushalt in Queens, New York, auf und erlebte die umformenden Ereignisse der 1960er als frühreife und wissbegierige Person mit. Diese besondere Überschneidung von Biographie und Geschichte lieferte einen fruchtbaren Grund für ihre gesellschaftlichen Vorstellungen und ihre Einblicke in die BEATLES als Phänomen.
Nachdem CANDY einen Masterabschluss in Menschliche Entwicklung und einen Doktor in Soziologie erhielt, begann sie ihre Karriere als akademische Wissenschaftlerin. Ihr Forschungsschwerpunkt lag auf der Wirkung der Medien und populären Kultur auf die Entwicklung von Kindern, Geschlechterbeziehungen und Familien.
Auf ihrem langen Weg von Queens zu ihrem derzeitigen Wohnsitz in Cambridge, Massachusetts, war sie Professorin, Talkshow-Gast, Anwältin für Kinder und Familien und Fachberaterin für qualitative Forschung in der Gesundheitspflege-Industrie. Sie ist auch Mutter und Großmutter. Und bei alldem hat sie ihre lebenslange Leidenschaft für die BEATLES aufrecht erhalten. Sie ist vertraut mir dem gesamten Lebenswerk der BEATLES, ihrer Biographie, ihren Kommentaren und ihrer Fankultur und schreibt über sie aus ihrem einzigartigen soziologischen Blickwinkel.
 
Beatles Museum:
Die BEATLES besuchten am Freitag, 7. Februar 1964, zum ersten Mal die USA und wurden sofort eine feste Größe im Leben vieler amerikanischen Fans. Mit Liedern, Worten, Bildern und Ideen verleiteten die FAB FOUR junge Amerikaner und Amerikanerinnen durch sechs Jahre ihrer Jugend und lieferten einen alternativen Bildungsplan mit mehr Spaß als in der Schule. Das Ergebnis war eine Beziehung der Fans aus erster Generation zu den BEATLES, wie sie es vorher nicht gab: eine starke Verbundenheit, tiefgreifend und sogar historisch bedeutend.
Teils Generationsdenkschrift und teils kulturelle Geschichte der 1960er Jahre erlaubt das Buch BEATLENESS noch einmal oder erstmals nachzuerleben, wie es war, mit den BEATLES aufzuwachsen. Basierend auf vielen Interviews kombiniert das Buch Originalanalysen des Phänomens BEATLES mit Bewertungen aus Fan-Episoden und Fotografien.
