Harry Benson’s photographs of Paul McCartney go back to 1964, that pivotal year for the Beatles when they took America by storm, toured the world and made their film debut with A HARD DAY’S NIGHT – the friendly Scot was always there with his camera. After the Fab Four split up and Paul went new ways both privately and artistically, it was also Benson who accompanied Paul and his wife Linda photographically at close range. With more than 100 colour and black-and-white photos by the legendary photojournalist, this collection offers intimate access to the life of a unique artist who spent almost his entire life in the spotlight and yet always remained a bit of an enigma. Benson’s camera follows Paul McCartney’s career and development both in his public appearance as an icon, singer, musician, performer, pop star, and in his private life as a husband and family man. We see him at the height of his fame with the Beatles, in the recording studio with his wife Linda and their joint band Wings, and during the Wings Over America tour (1975-76). We experience dancing through the night on the Queen Elizabeth 2, where Paul and Linda celebrate the band’s latest album with friends and celebrities, and finally the family idyll on their farm in England in the early 1990s. Sir Paul celebrates his eightieth birthday this year and Paul provides insights into a life that saw the creation of the world’s best-known and best-loved music.
