Es ist kein reines BEATLES AT THE BBC-Buch. Vielmehr ist es eine weitere BEATLES-Biografie – hervorragend gemacht, mit fantastischen Dokumenten. Man erfährt aufgrund von abgedruckten Briefen, dass (von wem auch immer) für 1969 drei BEATLES-Konzerte geplant waren, die zum Film werden sollten. (Letztlich mündete dieses Projekt in die GET BACK/LET IT BE-Sessions mit dem einen Konzert auf dem Dach des APPLE-Gebäudes am 30. Januar 1969.)
Die Dokumente verbildlichen bestens und quasi aus erster Hand einzelne BEATLES-Stationen. Auch die Fotos sind fantastisch und vermitteln viel vom Flair der 1960er Jahre, wenn man zum Beispiel sieht, wie die BEATLES-LP RUBBER SOUL am 24. November 1965 von einer Mitarbeiterin im englischen EMI-Produktionswerk in Hayes (Middlesex, England) auf Qualität geprüft wird. Aber es gibt auch hervorragende Fotos mit den BEATLES, etwa als die Musiker im April 1966 die Rolling Stones-LP “Aftermath” in den Händen halten.
Einige Doppelseite beinhalten aneinander gereihte Fotos in meist vier Reihen, die von BBC-Sendungen mit den BEATLES stammen; genaue Bildunterschriften dazu gibt es leider nicht.
Aber schon das Durchblättern macht Lust auf mehr.
Schwerpunkt ist schon das Thema BEATLES AT THE BBC, welches sich zumindest im Anhang niederschlägt: Eine genaue Chronologie der BBC- Radio- und Fernsehsendungen, bei denen die BEATLES mitwirkten. Eine alphabetische Auflistung aller Song, die die BEATLES in den Sendungen spielten (mit den nötigen Querverweisen) runden das Thema bestens ab.

BBC producer and author Kevin Howlett has been closely associated with the BEATLES throughout his career. He has previously written three books about them, and has made radio documentaries for APPLE CORPS. He wrote the booklet essays for all fourteen of the BEATLES’ albums remastered in 2009, and he wrote the notes and produced the FLY ON THE WALL bonus disc for the 2003 BEATLES remixed album LET IT BE … NAKED.

The year 2013 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the release of the BEATLES’ first album, PLEASE PLEASE ME. To celebrate this event with material that has never been in print or has not repeatedly resurfaced is a challenge.
