Text auf Coverrückseite von Eric Naylor:
Brothers Mike and Bernie Winters first hosted the Beatles on their ABC Television programme, „Big Night Out“. back in 1963 when they mimed to four songs – From Me To You (a shortened version), She Loves You, Twist And Shout and I Saw Her Standing There – on the show recorded in Manchester on September 1 and broadcast by ITV on September 7th. This earty appearance has survived the years and parts of it were used in the ANTHOLOGY series.
The following year, they made two appearances on the show, the first of which was recorded on February 23rd, 1964, just hours after arriving home from their first trip to America. The musical performances this time (mimed once again) featured All My Loving, I Wanna Be Your Man, Till There Was You (a shortened version), Please Mister Postman, Money (That’s What I Want) and I Want To Hold Your Hand. They also featured in several of the comedy sketches during the show, one of which included their arrival at the studios in Middlesex by boat via the river Thames. Broadcast across all of the UK regions by ITV on Febnuary 29 th (all, that is, except London – they had to wait until March 3 rd), the progmmme was also sold overseas and copies of this version Still exist today (unfortunately with the song Money (That’s What I Want) missing, for reasons unknown).
For their third appearance on July 19 th, 1964, they flew up to Blackpool to appear at the ABC Theatre for the summer edition of the show. which was broadcast under the title of „Blackpool Night Out“.
This time, they performed live, singing five numbers – A Hard Day’s Night, Things We Said Today; You Can’t Do That, If I Fell and Long Tall Sally – and once again participated in the comedy sketches. Sadly, the video of this show has not survived, but excellent quality audio recordings have been preserved of all five songs.
Their final appearance on the show – and the one featured on the disc you are now holding in your hands – dates from August 1st, 1965, was another live appearance on the summer edition from the ABC Theatre in Blackpool. Ir was networked across Britain by ITV and shown by all but one of the regional broadcasters between 9.10 and 10.05 pm.
Alongside a couple of now familiar titles that had been issued as singles – I Feel Fine and Ticket To Ride – anyone watching that night would have seen and heard the first public performances of I’m Down, Act Naturally (with Ringo introducing himself before singing his new number from the forthcoming LP) and the title track, Help! itself. But lt was the track Yesterday that caused most discussion.
John left the stage as George stepped up to introduce the next number while Ringo remained sat behind his drum kit As Paul picked up an acoustic guitar, George (before running off the stage himself) introduced Yesterday and left Paul to sing the song on his own, backed only by a string accompaniment as the stage lights dimmed.
Never had this been done before and it must have appeared odd to many who had never seen just one Beatle perfonning on his own.
When John returned to the stage at the end of Paul’s solo performance, he made light of the situatton by commenting to Ringo that he had been wonderful while sitting there all through the number in the dark and presented Paul with a large bunch of flowers that came apart in his hands to leave Paul holding only the stems!
The final number, Help!, was introduced by John (who jokingly tells some of the screamers in the audience to „Shut up, or I’ll kill you!“) and even though it was their newest song, he forgets some of the words and mumbles his way through a couple of lines,
In just a couple of weeks’ time, the Beatles repeated the exact same six songs when they recorded their next appearance for the „Ed Sullivan Show“ in New York and then the day after that, it was the record-breaking appearance at Shea Stadium, the first date of their 196S US Tour … but that’s another story.
